Large corporations and organizations are heavy with the sales tactics. They have been around long enough to understand the market, they have resources and expertise to help them in all aspects of business and most importantly they can shell out money to make their sales tactics work. As a small or medium enterprise, your resources are limited. You need to concentrate all your energy and time into building your brand and the products you are going to offer. Finances most of the time are scarce, so you need to channel them to the appropriate activities before you start making profits. But sales are a really important component of business and without the right strategies, you will not be able to sell your commodities and therefore earn enough to be able to sustain and expand your enterprise.

  1. BE THE REPRESENTATIVE – For large firms, there are a number of brand ambassadors to promote their stock – the company name, logo, paid endorsements, advertisements, goodwill, etc. For a small or medium enterprise there isn’t enough knowledge with the public about your business, so there is limited scope to promoting your firm through these pricey avenues. However, being part of the business has its advantages – you and your employees can be representatives by how you live and interact daily. You can go one step ahead and buy matching t-shirts with the company’s logo, go out to places together, post group photographs on social media, etc.
  2. USE TESTIMONIALS – There may be customers who have already used your product & service and have good things to say. Take advantage of their positivity and ask them to contribute to testimonials. You can post this on your website, social media outlets or even within your premises. Positivity always spreads and when potential clients read these, they will be encouraged to contribute towards your cause.
  3. WORD OF MOUTH – I have a friend who built a clothing store and then expanded to several branches, earning only through word of mouth! He has never advertised or marketed what he has to sell. This comes from being cordial and generous with the first few clients who will then spread it to the rest of society and earn you more business. Even your friends and family can do the needful by letting the people they meet know about your wonderful enterprise.
  4. ONLINE PRESENCE – The world of the Internet is vast and deep. Many small to medium enterprises are taking it digital and setting up professional websites as well as taking advantage of social media. If you have something to sell right from home products to makeup and clothing, you can even take advantage of Instagram and sell your products through there! The benefits you will receive from making an online presence is just that – vast and deep.
  5. GOODWILL – At the start up stage, it is important to earn goodwill from your society and clientele base. Providing discounts, offers, coupons, free services, etc. will earn your way in the good books. Another way that you can contribute to society and develop goodwill is to volunteer at charity events, donate your products and at the same time promote your business. It’s a win-win for everybody!
